Queen Beatrix opened the house on 24 August 1984, two years after building began, and it took its name from a city gate that once stood nearby. It is the largest performing-arts venue in northern Limburg: 764 seats in the main auditorium, 220 in the small hall and five conference rooms, the whole set up and run by a company founded by the municipality. In 2000 the stage tower was raised from 18.68 metres to more than 24. Touring opera passes through — Il barbiere di Siviglia in 2001, Carmen in 2011.
