Hoogeveen's council resolved in 1960 to build a cultural centre; Onno Greiner designed it and Queen Juliana opened De Tamboer on 21 April 1967. The building was replaced in the 1990s, again from Greiner's plans, and the new house opened on 1 September 1997. It has a large hall of 760 seats and a second of 480, and four commedia dell'arte figures by Arie Teeuwisse stand in the inner courtyard. The name recalls the drummers who once carried official news through the streets of the town.
