Theater Hameln opened on 2 January 1953 with Mozart's Die Zauberflöte. Established as a receiving theatre, it presents visiting productions rather than maintaining a full resident company. Its programme encompasses drama, opera, operetta, musicals, ballet, concerts and comedy. The Hamelner Tanztheatertage have provided a focus for visiting dance productions. Work for children and young people takes place both in the main auditorium and in the smaller Theater auf der Bühne, or TAB. Partnerships with schools, theatre clubs, backstage tours and workshops extend its activity beyond public performances. Built in 1951-52 on the Rathausplatz and opened in 1953 with Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, the house belongs to the town of Hameln and keeps no company of its own. Some 700 seats remain after the refurbishment of 1990-91. The season is assembled from touring productions — drama, opera, operetta, musical, ballet — brought in by ensembles from across Germany; an evening of operatic tenor repertoire with orchestra in January 2019 sat in that pattern.
