Kunio Maekawa's building of 1961 stands in Ueno Park, facing across the way the museum designed by his teacher Le Corbusier, its deep overhanging eave answering the older block's mass. Two rooms lie inside: a main hall of 2,303 seats, long the city's principal stage for opera and ballet, and a recital hall of 649. A thorough renovation in 1998–99 brought the technical apparatus up to date. The hall is run by the Tokyo Metropolitan Foundation for History and Culture and remains one of Tokyo's central venues for orchestral music.
