Tsinghua University was established in Beijing in 1911. It opened a university division in 1925 and adopted the name National Tsinghua University in 1928. During the war with Japan it moved south and joined Peking and Nankai universities in the National Southwest Associated University in Kunming; it returned to Beijing in 1946. Reorganisation in 1952 concentrated its teaching on engineering. From the late twentieth century it restored and expanded disciplines in the sciences, humanities, economics, management, law and arts, developing into a comprehensive research university. Its Beijing campus combines early twentieth-century university buildings with later academic and cultural facilities. Henry Killam Murphy's domed auditorium of 1921 stands at the head of Tsinghua's oldest lawn, one of the four early buildings that set the character of the campus. The university itself dates from 1911 and was founded with indemnity money returned by the United States. Its halls have long been used for ceremonies and concerts as well as teaching, and visiting orchestras appear in them, playing to audiences that are large and young.
