The Vietnam National Academy of Music in Hanoi was founded in 1956 and was formerly known as the Hanoi National Conservatory of Music. Its work combines professional training, performance and research, with study extending from secondary-level music education to undergraduate, master’s and doctoral programmes. Teaching encompasses Western orchestral instruments, voice, composition and conducting alongside Vietnamese traditional music and jazz. The academy’s performing bodies include the Hanoi Philharmonic Orchestra, chamber and traditional-music orchestras, and a choir. International partnerships support exchanges of teachers, visiting performers and student participation in regional youth orchestras. Its graduates have contributed to Vietnam’s musical life as performers, composers, conductors, teachers and researchers. Vietnam's principal conservatoire opened in Hanoi in 1956 as the Vietnam School of Music, became the Hanoi Conservatory in 1982 and took its present name in 2008. Some 1,500 students and 359 teachers work on a campus of nearly two hectares on Hào Nam street, under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Western classical training sits beside the study of traditional Vietnamese instruments, and three bodies are housed within the school: a traditional orchestra, the Institute of Musicology, which archives and researches that repertoire, and the Hanoi Philharmonic Orchestra.
