Concert life across the Yaroslavl region is organised around a single room. The hall of the state philharmonic society, in the centre of the city, carries the subscription series, the visits of soloists travelling out from Moscow and St Petersburg, and the resident symphony orchestra's own seasons. It is a working hall rather than a monument: chamber recitals, organ and choral evenings and concerts for schoolchildren fill the weeks between the orchestral programmes, and the building is in use most days of the season. The Leonid Sobinov Concert Hall is the principal concert venue of the Yaroslavl State Philharmonic. A Wilhelm Sauer organ was installed at the philharmonic in 1974. The hall hosted the premiere of Tikhon Khrennikov's Second Violin Concerto in 1975, with Leonid Kogan as soloist.
