The fortress on the Jakobsberg took its present four-sided form around 1660, when Elector Johann Philipp von Schönborn had the earlier earthwork Schweickhardtsburg rebuilt in stone as part of the Mainz fortifications. It has belonged to the city since the twentieth century and holds municipal offices and the Stadthistorisches Museum; the Roman Drususstein stands inside the walls, and the site has been a protected monument since 1907. The grounds carry an open-air programme — the OpenOhr festival every Whitsun since 1975, and staged opera as well.
