Alessandro Serra recorded Bottesini's Second Concerto — with the Allegro grande di concerto alongside it — with the Plovdiv Philharmonic Orchestra in August 1999. The disc appeared on Music Minus One, with both a complete performance and an orchestral track against which other bassists work at the solo part. He had joined the orchestra of La Scala and the Filarmonica della Scala in 1996, after study with Franco Petracchi, Giuseppe Ettorre and Raffaello Majoni and seasons in the European Union Youth Orchestra and the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester. The year of the Plovdiv sessions also brought him second prize at the Giovanni Bottesini International Competition, and he has since played chamber music with the Cameristi della Scala and worked at the Lucerne Festival. The conductor of the Plovdiv recording was Nayden Todorov.
