Биография
Goldfinger, whose lyric Newley wrote with Leslie Bricusse to John Barry's music in 1964, came in the middle of a career that had started in child acting — the Artful Dodger in David Lean's Oliver Twist in 1948 — and then ran through singing, songwriting and the stage. With Bricusse he wrote Stop the World – I Want to Get Off and The Roar of the Greasepaint – The Smell of the Crowd, taking the 1963 Grammy for song of the year with What Kind of Fool Am I; the same partnership produced Feeling Good and the songs for Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, among them Pure Imagination and The Candy Man. Newley recorded much of his own material in a mannered London delivery that David Bowie acknowledged as an early influence. Born in Hackney in 1931, he died in Florida in 1999.
