Announced for The Four Italian Tenors at Varna on 10 April 2020, with the Varna Philharmonic Orchestra and the three other tenors of the billing — Alessandro D'Acrissa, Federico Parisi and Federico Serra — Giovanni Maria Palmia never sang the concert. The engagement was cancelled. A tenor from Reggio Emilia, he took his diploma at the Arrigo Boito Conservatory in Parma in 2014 in the class of Ilia Aramayo and went on to the opera school of the Teatro Comunale in Bologna. Gastone in La traviata came in Bologna in 2015, and Carlo Moor in I masnadieri at the Verdi Festival in Busseto in 2016, and Alfredo and Pinkerton followed; the tenor quartet that was to have brought him to Varna also appeared in the United States.
