Still a postgraduate student, Jaklin Carkci sang Azucena and the Mother in Menotti's The Consul at the Istanbul State Opera and Ballet. She completed the postgraduate opera course at the Istanbul University State Conservatory in 1990 and sang Ulrica in 1991. Born in Istanbul in 1958, she went on to work with Belkıs Aran and at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, and in 1991 sang Melanto in Monteverdi's Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria at the Teatro dei Rinnovati. The dramatic mezzo and contralto roles have been the centre of her repertoire; she sang Carmen twice at the Sofia Opera in October 2003. She has also published academic research on performance anxiety among opera, ballet and theatre artists. She also performed dramatic soprano repertoire in the 1990s.
