John Powell trained as a violinist and wrote advertising music before film took him over. Born in London in 1963, he assisted Patrick Doyle, moved to the United States in 1997 and joined Hans Zimmer's film-music team, working with Harry Gregson-Williams on Antz, Chicken Run and Shrek. His own scores include The Bourne Identity, Happy Feet and How to Train Your Dragon, which brought an Academy Award nomination, and he wrote Solo: A Star Wars Story with John Williams. Away from the cinema he has written choral and orchestral music, among it A Prussian Requiem.
