Count di Luna, Iago, Malatesta and the title role in Sweeney Todd give the range of Michael Nansel's work — an American baritone whose repertoire includes Verdi, operetta and American music theatre. He sang Leuthold in Rossini's Guillaume Tell with Wichita Grand Opera in February 2014, a company that had named him its Singer of the Year two seasons earlier. He has appeared with Mississippi Opera. In 2003 he took the Washington Area Theatre Community Honours twice in one year, for outstanding lead actor and outstanding featured actor in a musical, and he has twice been in casts nominated for Helen Hayes Awards. Don Giovanni, Belcore and Escamillo sit beside the Verdi parts, and his concert work takes in Mendelssohn's Elijah, Haydn's Creation, Handel's Messiah, the Mozart, Fauré and Brahms requiems and Beethoven's Mass in C. He has sung under Julius Rudel, Plácido Domingo, Eugene Kohn, Marin Alsop, Steven Mercurio and Gregory Buchalter, and on stage with Joyce DiDonato, Salvatore Licitra and Yunah Lee. He lives in the Washington area.
