Tine Thing Helseth picked up a trumpet in an Oslo school band at seven and had won the Norwegian soloist championship by seventeen. Born in Oslo in August 1987, she studied at the Barratt Due Institute of Music and then at the Norwegian Academy of Music, with Arnulf Naur Nilsen of the Oslo Philharmonic among her teachers; second place at Eurovision Young Musicians in 2006 and a Spellemannspris as newcomer the following year opened a soloist's career built on an instrument whose concerto literature is short, and therefore on arrangement, transcription and new writing. In 2007 she founded tenThing, the all-female brass ensemble that has since played the BBC Proms and the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival and toured China and the United States. Her recordings for EMI and later Warner Classics began with Storyteller in 2012, and ECHO Klassik named her newcomer of the year in 2013. She teaches trumpet at the Norwegian Academy of Music, and since 2023 has been artistic director of the Risør Chamber Music Festival. Katowice heard her in April 2025, as soloist in the Symfonia rewolucyjna programme given by the Polish Radio National Symphony Orchestra. A Borletti Buitoni Trust Fellowship came in 2009, and she later sat on the jury of the Eurovision Young Musicians competition she had once entered. Nico Muhly's trumpet concerto Doom Paintings was written for her and given its first European performances in Antwerp and Amsterdam. Her albums on the Norwegian label LAWO include Seraph, the trumpet and organ programme Magical Memories and She Composes Like a Man of 2024, made with tenThing from music by women composers, while the interdisciplinary Tine@Munch marked the hundred and fiftieth anniversary of Edvard Munch's birth.
