Antonia in Les contes d'Hoffmann brought Virginia Tola onto the stage of the Teatro Colón, the house whose Instituto Superior de Arte had trained her, under Ana Sirulnik and Gustavo Valerio. She was born in 1976 in Santo Tomé, in the Argentine province of Santa Fe, took first prize at the Queen Sonja International Music Competition in Oslo in 1999, and the following year left Operalia with three awards, the Audience and Zarzuela prizes among them. Study with Raina Kabaivanska came afterwards. The Royal Opera House, the Teatro Real, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Rome, Los Angeles, Amsterdam and Brussels have followed, with returns to the Colón and concert appearances alongside Plácido Domingo; Verdi and Puccini stand at the centre of a repertoire that also takes in Le nozze di Figaro, Così fan tutte and Carmen.
