Bach entered this cantata in his Leipzig performance materials for the fifteenth Sunday after Trinity, 17 September 1730, and added the note et in ogni tempo — for any occasion — which suggests he expected to reuse it. It is scored for a single soprano, solo trumpet, strings and continuo, with no chorus at all, and the demands on both soloists go beyond anything else in his church music; who sang it in Leipzig has never been established. The closing Alleluia sets the voice and trumpet against each other in open competition.
