The James Bond theme was credited to Monty Norman, who wrote it for Dr. No in 1962 by reworking a tune from his unstaged musical of A House for Mr Biswas; John Barry's orchestra recorded it, and Barry's arrangement — the surf-guitar riff, the brass stabs, the twelve-bar structure — is what listeners recognise. Who wrote what has been litigated: Norman won libel damages against a newspaper in 2001 over the claim that the music was Barry's. Barry went on to score eleven Bond films and to supply most of the series' other recurring material.
