Roumen Boyadjieff Jr. wrote The Little Match Girl, after Andersen, as his first children's operetta, to a libretto by Venelin Metodiev. The Sofia Philharmonic gave the concert performance in 2012 under Grigor Palikarov, and the work brought its composer the Musician of the Year award for a creative debut from the Bulgarian National Radio programme Allegro Vivace. A staged production followed at the National Musical Theatre in 2014. The overture is played separately; born in 1979, Boyadjieff has since written a Requiem Mass, concertos for horn, bassoon and brass octet, and a large body of film music.
