Rancor and Triumph was composed in 2019 by the American composer Jessica T. Carter and re-orchestrated by her in 2023. Carter works chiefly in orchestral and chamber forms and has been programmed by American orchestras through initiatives for living Black composers; the concerto is her principal work for cello and orchestra. The title states the two poles the solo part moves between, and the 2023 revision was made for a specific set of performances rather than as a general reworking. Details of the commission and of the first performance have not been published by the composer.
