Ferdinand David led the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig from 1836 and was the violinist for whom Mendelssohn wrote his violin concerto; he also produced concert pieces for the players sitting behind him. The Bassoon Concertino in B flat major, opus 12, was published by Kistner in 1840, and David issued at the same time an alternative version for viola, with piano reductions of both. Like his earlier trombone concertino it is a compact work in linked sections rather than a full concerto, and it remains one of the few Romantic solo pieces for the bassoon.
