Gershwin wrote Embraceable You in 1928 for East Is West, an operetta that was abandoned, and put it two years later into Girl Crazy, where Ginger Rogers sang it on Broadway. Ira's lyric plays on the -able rhyme until it becomes a joke the singer is in on. The song left the show almost at once and became a standard, one of the handful of Gershwin melodies that jazz musicians have never stopped rebuilding.
