Love Walked In was among the last songs George Gershwin completed. He was writing for the film The Goldwyn Follies in Hollywood when the headaches began that turned out to be a brain tumour; he died in July 1937, aged thirty-eight, and the picture opened the following year. Ira Gershwin finished the lyric. The tune is deliberately hymn-like, moving in even steps where his earlier songs would have syncopated, and it has been read ever since as a farewell it was never meant to be.
