El barbero de Sevilla is a one-act zarzuela that Gerónimo Giménez wrote jointly with Manuel Nieto to a libretto by Guillermo Perrín and Miguel de Palacios, first staged at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid in 1901. The plot turns on a company rehearsing Rossini's opera, and Me llaman la primorosa is sung by Elena, the soprano preparing the role of Rosina — an aria within an aria, written as a coloratura showpiece with cadenzas to the high E flat. It has long outlived the work that contains it.
