Mauro Giuliani moved from southern Italy to Vienna in 1806 and within two years had established himself in a city where Beethoven's music was being written and played around him; he took part in the 1813 premiere of the Seventh Symphony as a cellist. The First Guitar Concerto in A major, op. 30, belongs to those early Vienna years and was published there by Artaria. It is scored so that the guitar is never covered — strings with light wind support — and its finale is a polonaise, the fashionable dance of the moment.
