Louis Glass was a concert pianist before paralysis in one arm ended that career and turned him to composition; the Fantasia for piano and orchestra, op. 47, comes from the later part of a life spent largely in Copenhagen, where he ran his father's music school and led the Danish Concert Association. He had studied in Brussels and absorbed there the two influences that shaped him, César Franck and Anton Bruckner — cyclic form from the first, orchestral breadth from the second. The Fantasia is his only substantial concertante work.
