Zhetva (Harvest) and Dance

Goleminov completed Nestinarka in 1940 and the dance drama reached the Sofia Opera on 4 January 1942, conducted by Assen Naydenov, with a scenario by Hrisan Tsankov and choreography by Maria Dimova. It made his name overnight and has stayed in the repertory since. The subject is the fire-dancing ritual of the Strandzha villages: Demna, chosen to walk barefoot over embers, marries into another village and is treated there as possessed. Goleminov, trained at the Schola Cantorum in Paris, set the ritual without softening it — irregular metres, drone harmony, and a percussion-driven dance at the centre.
