Horner scored Titanic in 1997 for a production widely expected to fail, combining orchestra, synthesizers and the wordless voice of the Norwegian singer Sissel Kyrkjebø. He wrote My Heart Will Go On with the lyricist Will Jennings without telling James Cameron, who had ruled out a pop song, and recorded a demo with Céline Dion before presenting it. The soundtrack became the best-selling orchestral film album released to that point, and score and song both took Academy Awards. The melody returns through the film in instrumental form long before it is ever sung.
