Hejre Kati is the fourth of the Scènes de la csárda, the series of concert pieces on Hungarian gypsy-band material that Jenő Hubay published from the 1880s onward and played on his own tours. It follows the standard two-part scheme of the csárdás — a slow, freely declaimed opening and a fast section that accelerates to the end — with the violin imitating the flourishes of a primás. Hubay, born in Budapest in 1858, taught at the academy there for more than forty years; Szigeti, Vecsey, Telmányi and Eugene Ormandy all passed through his class.
