Williams wrote the Jurassic Park score in 1993 before the digital animals were finished, working from Spielberg's descriptions and incomplete footage. He composed two principal themes rather than one: a broad hymn-like melody for the first sight of the creatures, and a brass fanfare for the island, both announced by horns over sustained strings. The score is built around awe rather than terror; the menace in the film is carried mostly by silence and by low ostinato figures. The main theme is now played in concert far more often than the film's action music.
