Asenevtsi

Asenevtsi is a symphonic-choral work by Nikolo Kotzev, the Bulgarian guitarist and composer known abroad for the rock opera Nostradamus, written after his return to Bulgaria in 2010. It was commissioned for the sound-and-light spectacle on the Tsarevets hill in Veliko Tarnovo, the fortress of the medieval Bulgarian capital, and takes its title from the Asen dynasty that ruled from it. The score is built for the scale of that site: full orchestra and chorus written to carry across open ground and to be heard against projected light rather than in a hall. It was first performed in Veliko Tarnovo on 23 May 2016.
