Schön ist die Welt is a rewriting. Lehár's Endlich allein of 1914 had a second act set on an Alpine peak with almost no plot and forty minutes of continuous music; the war swallowed the piece. In 1930 he kept the idea, replaced most of the score, and had Ludwig Herzer and Fritz Löhner-Beda supply a new book; the result opened at the Metropol-Theater in Berlin on 3 December with Richard Tauber and Gitta Alpár. A prince and a princess, betrothed against their will, meet in the mountains without knowing who the other is.
