The oboe concerto in D minor was printed in Amsterdam around 1717 and appeared under several names before Alessandro Marcello's was settled on — it was long credited to his brother Benedetto and at times to Vivaldi. Bach transcribed it for solo harpsichord, BWV 974, which is how the music survived in the German-speaking world. The second movement, an Adagio over a repeated accompaniment, is the section usually extracted: the oboe's line is written plainly and expects the player to ornament it, as the period assumed.
