Karl Millöcker's Gräfin Dubarry reached the Theater an der Wien on 31 October 1879 and then largely disappeared. In 1931 Paul Knepler and Ignaz Michael Welleminsky rewrote the book into nine scenes and Theo Mackeben rearranged and expanded the music; this version, retitled Die Dubarry, opened at the Berlin Admiralspalast on 14 August 1931 with Gitta Alpár in the title role. It is the 1931 score that is played today, and the waltz song Ich schenk' mein Herz belongs to it. The subject is the milliner's assistant who became the last mistress of Louis XV.
