The version Petipa and Minkus produced in Moscow in December 1869 was in four acts and eight scenes, and it differs considerably from what is danced under the same title now. Petipa expanded it into five acts for St Petersburg in 1871, adding numbers Minkus wrote for the occasion, and Gorsky rebuilt it again in 1900. Reconstructions of the 1869 original therefore depend on repetiteur notations and surviving orchestral material rather than on a single authoritative score. Minkus composed sixteen full-length ballets in Russia and left almost nothing outside the theatre.
