Mozart composed K. 242 in Salzburg in February 1776 for Countess Antonia Lodron and her two daughters, writing the third keyboard part simply enough for the younger and less advanced of them. He later made a version for two pianos, which is the form usually played today and the one this entry describes. The music is deliberately sociable rather than demanding: themes are handed round from one instrument to the next, the orchestra stays discreet, and the concerto works as much as a portrait of a household as a display piece.
