The third of the concertos Mozart published by subscription in Vienna, K. 413–415, and the most public in tone: trumpets and drums appear here, absent from its companions. He played it at his own academy in the Burgtheater on 23 March 1783, in the presence of Joseph II. The first movement opens with a fugal exposition that is then brushed aside by a march; the rondo finale is twice interrupted by an Adagio in C minor that arrives without explanation and leaves the same way. The set was advertised as playable with string quartet alone.
