Dated 16 December 1785 in Mozart's catalogue and written while he was finishing Le nozze di Figaro. It is the first of his concertos to use clarinets, and he removed the oboes to make room for them, producing a wind sound closer to a serenade than to the concertos on either side of it. Leopold Mozart reported that at one performance the C minor Andante had to be repeated — an unusual demand for a slow movement. The hunting rondo of the finale is interrupted by an Andantino cantabile that behaves like a separate movement dropped into it.
