Dated 4 December 1786, the last of the twelve concertos Mozart wrote for his Viennese subscription concerts and the end of a series begun three years earlier. By then the subscriptions had thinned and his concert career in the city was contracting; only two more concertos followed in the remaining five years. K. 503 is the longest and the most orchestral of them, with a first movement that keeps postponing its own themes and a march-like figure that shifts between major and minor without ever settling the question one way or the other.
