Mozart's first piano concerto not based on other composers' music, written in Salzburg in December 1773, shortly after a stay in Vienna. He kept it in his repertoire for the next decade and played it in Vienna in 1782, reporting to his father that it was still making a great effect; for those performances he replaced the original finale with a new rondo, K. 382, a set of variations the Viennese found irresistible. The concerto is scored with trumpets and drums, unusually assertive for a seventeen-year-old writing for his own hands.
