La finta giardiniera was commissioned for the Munich carnival and first performed at the Salvatortheater on 13 January 1775, three weeks before Mozart's nineteenth birthday. The plot is a comedy of disguise in which a marchioness, stabbed and left for dead by her lover, takes work as a gardener under a false name; two of the characters lose their reason before it is resolved. Mozart wrote seven principal roles and gave each a distinct manner. The Italian score was later fitted with German dialogue and played as a Singspiel, and for a century the original version was thought incomplete.
