Dated 14 June 1775 in Salzburg, the second of the five violin concertos Mozart wrote there within a single year, when he was nineteen and leading the archbishop's orchestra. It is the shortest and lightest of the group: two oboes, two horns and strings, no trumpets, and a first movement that begins without ceremony. The slow movement is a serenade in all but name, and the finale is a rondo in minuet tempo rather than the fast dance the pattern would predict. Whether Mozart played it himself is not documented, though he was well able to.
