Monty Norman was engaged to write the music for Dr. No in 1962 and adapted a theme from an unproduced musical of his own into what became the James Bond signature. John Barry arranged and recorded it with his own group, supplying the surf-guitar line and brass stabs that fixed its character. Who had written what was disputed for four decades; Norman won a libel action over the question in 2001. The theme has been reworked for every film in the series, and the suites played in concert gather it together with the title songs that followed it.
