Invierno porteño dates from 1970, one of the last two of the four Buenos Aires seasons Piazzolla wrote between 1965 and 1970 for his own quintet. Its closing pages quote the Pachelbel canon, a gesture Piazzolla made without irony. The piece is built in the slow, heavily articulated manner he called tango nuevo, with the bandoneón carrying the line over a fixed harmonic pattern. Because the four pieces were composed separately, each stands on its own and Invierno is often programmed alone; Desyatnikov's arrangement for violin and strings made that easier still.
