Otoño porteño was written in 1969, the second of the four Buenos Aires seasons Piazzolla composed between 1965 and 1970 for his quintet of bandoneón, violin, electric guitar, double bass and piano. It alternates driving outer material with a slow central section in which the violin is asked for a deliberately rough, scraped sound — one of the effects that made Piazzolla's music unacceptable to tango traditionalists in Argentina for years. The piece circulates both in the quintet original and in Leonid Desyatnikov's arrangement for violin and string orchestra.
