Tuileries belongs to Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, written in twenty days in the spring of 1874 in memory of the artist Viktor Hartmann. The suite’s sharply drawn images have inspired numerous arrangements, most famously Ravel’s orchestration. In this miniature, the larger memorial design briefly becomes a scene of quick movement and vivid character before the musical visitor continues through the gallery.
