Rota composed the Trombone Concerto in C in 1966 and dedicated it to Bruno Ferrari, who gave the first performance on 6 March 1969 at the Verdi Conservatory in Milan with the orchestra I Pomeriggi Musicali under Franco Caracciolo. Its three movements — Allegro giusto, Lento ben ritmato, Allegro moderato — run about thirteen minutes. Rota, who directed the Bari conservatory for nearly thirty years, wrote a steady stream of concert music alongside his film scores, and this concerto has become one of the standard twentieth-century works for the instrument.
