Giulietta degli spiriti was Fellini's first feature in colour, released in 1965, with Giulietta Masina as a wife who begins to see visions as her marriage fails. Rota answered the film's movement between domestic reality and hallucination by mixing idioms without transition: dance-band numbers, circus marches, harpsichord, wordless voices. He had been working with Fellini since Lo sceicco bianco in 1952 and by this point composed with the director rather than after him, often at the piano while scenes were still being planned. The suites drawn from the score keep that abrupt, collage-like sequence.
