Die Fledermaus was put together quickly in the autumn of 1873 — Strauss is said to have drafted it in about six weeks — and reached the Theater an der Wien on 5 April 1874, in the aftermath of the Vienna stock exchange crash. Haffner and Genée built the libretto from a French vaudeville, Le Réveillon, which had itself come from a German farce. The second act is a party at which everyone appears under a false name; its finale, beginning Im Feuerstrom der Reben, moves from a champagne toast through a chorus of universal brotherhood into a ballroom that dissolves at dawn.
