Der Rosenkavalier, first staged in Dresden in January 1911 to Hugo von Hofmannsthal's libretto, was popular enough that its music began circulating in concert arrangements almost at once. The orchestral suite in current use dates from the mid-1940s and was not compiled by Strauss himself — Artur Rodziński conducted the first performance with the New York Philharmonic, and Strauss subsequently sanctioned publication. It follows the opera's order: the horn calls of the prelude, the presentation of the silver rose, the waltzes attached to Ochs, and the closing trio and duet.
